Concept work
A self-initiated concept. There is no client, and no results are claimed.

The brief we set ourselves

Personal-finance apps tend to shout: badges, streaks, colourful charts. We wanted the opposite — an app that is calm because it is exact, where the numbers are the interface.

The idea

Mono is a fictional spending app. Every figure is set in tabular numerals so columns align and changes are easy to compare. Charts share one monochrome language. A single signal colour appears only where something changed, so the eye always knows where to look.

Typography and colour

DM Mono for every number, Schibsted Grotesk for words. Paper, fog and ink make up almost the whole interface; the signal orange is rationed.

Signature interaction

Switch between months. The figures change in place without the columns moving, and the signal colour follows the biggest change.

What we would test next

Whether one signal colour is enough for people with colour-vision differences (we pair it with arrows and text), how dense a month can get before the calm breaks, and whether monospaced figures feel trustworthy or cold.
